The biggest mistake you can make when buying a car overseas!

You’ve found it: the perfect car, in the right color, at a price that makes shipping it across the ocean seem worthwhile. You’re already picturing it in your driveway.
But before you send a deposit, there’s one question that matters more than the mileage, condition, or asking price:
Is it old enough to import into the United States?
For buyers planning to use the classic-car import exemption, purchasing a vehicle before it turns 25 can derail the entire project.
Understanding the U.S. 25-Year Import Rule
Many vehicles sold overseas were never built or certified to meet U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Once a vehicle is at least 25 years old, it can generally be imported without having to meet those federal safety standards. Younger vehicles need a different qualifying import pathway.
The important detail: that 25-year period runs from the vehicle’s date of manufacture—not simply its advertised model year.
That small distinction can make a big difference when you’re buying a car close to the cutoff.
A Model Year Isn’t Enough
Imagine you’re shopping in March 2027 and find a car advertised as a 2002 model.
Subtracting 2002 from 2027 gives you 25. However, if that particular vehicle was manufactured in November 2002, it won’t reach its 25th birthday until November 2027.
Before committing, obtain reliable evidence of its manufacturing date. A manufacturer’s label or supporting documentation can help establish its age. An advertisement alone isn’t enough to plan an import around.
Confirm eligibility for the intended U.S. entry date before booking shipping.
“The Seller Says It Can Be Exported”
A seller may be completely correct that a vehicle can leave their country.
That still leaves a separate question: can it legally enter the United States under the import pathway you intend to use?
Treat export arrangements and U.S. import eligibility as two separate checks. A seller’s willingness to arrange transport doesn’t replace reviewing the vehicle’s age, identity, documentation, and applicable requirements.
Getting those answers before paying gives you the opportunity to choose another vehicle—or plan an overseas purchase and storage arrangement around a later eligible entry date.
Are There Exceptions for Cars Under 25?
Yes. Some younger vehicles already comply with U.S. standards, while others may qualify through specific compliance procedures or limited exemptions.
However, a younger vehicle that was never certified for the U.S. market may require an eligibility determination and a Registered Importer to bring it into compliance. You should confirm the available route and its cost before buying.
Never assume you can resolve eligibility after the car arrives.
Turning 25 Doesn’t Complete Every Import Requirement
The 25-year exemption addresses federal vehicle safety standards. EPA emissions requirements are a separate consideration.
EPA has an age-based pathway for vehicles at least 21 years old, with configuration requirements that deserve particular attention when an engine has been replaced or modified. EPA recommends checking engine equivalency before relying on that provision.
You’ll also need to account for customs paperwork, applicable duties and fees, and the requirements for titling and registering the vehicle in your state.
What to Check Before Sending a Deposit
Before purchasing a car overseas, establish:
Its identity: Do the chassis or VIN details match the documents?
Its age: What evidence supports the manufacturing date?
Its eligibility: Which U.S. import pathway applies?
Its configuration: Has the engine or vehicle been substantially modified?
Its total cost: What will purchase, shipping, customs clearance, and delivery actually cost?
A low overseas asking price is only useful if the vehicle fits your import plans.
